Singapore, 30 July 2017 – It was an unforgettable melodious moment as more than 1,500 Singaporeans sang their hearts out together in a rousing mass sing-along at the Toa Payoh HDB Hub this evening. Together with Guest-of-Honour, Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, they sang a repertoire of National Day theme songs, Singapore folk songs and familiar pop music. This was part of the 11th National Day Sing-Along (第11届爱国歌曲大家唱), co-organised by the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), in celebration of Singapore’s 52nd year of independence.
The energetic crowd belted out to crowd-favourite tunes such as Stand Up for Singapore, Rasa Sayang, Abba’s Dancing Queen, Munnaeru Vaalibaa, Voices from the Heart (小人物的心声) and Good Morning Sir (早安老师) during the two-hour event, which includes a medley of National Day songs by a school choir, comprising 53 students from Wellington Primary and Bartley Secondary.
The crowd also cheered with encouragement as 12 students from Nanyang Technological University Welfare Services Club (NTUWSC)’s Regular Service Project for the Deaf Community (RSPDC) took the stage and performed One People, One Nation and One Singapore – the theme song of National Day Parade in 1990, and Chinese all-time-favourite Moonlight in the City (城里的月光) expressing the wonderful rhythms of the songs in sign language, adding on to the spirit of inclusivity during the sing-along session for Singapore’s birthday.
Participants were engaged throughout the evening, with three vivacious event hosts – Gan Yu Thiam, Bukoh Mary and Kenneth Kong – playing interactive games such as guess-the-song with audiences on-stage before the sing-along.
Supported by the National Integration Council and Central Singapore CDC, the annual Sing-Along aims to gather and excite the public in commemorating our nation’s birthday while fostering greater social cohesion and interaction among different communities in Singapore as they sing to familiar tunes as one nation together.
