Singapore, 26 July 2018 – This August, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC)’s TGIF Music Station, a fortnightly series of free music showcases, makes its return with a refreshed concert format to kickstart the weekends on the right note. Featuring Singapore’s very own home-grown talents from the likes of Kelly Poon to ShiGGa Shay, TGIF Music Station brings a diverse curation of tunes for everyone, and is part of the SCCC’s efforts to promote local arts and culture and invigorate the Central Business District.
Mr Lee Ee Wurn, Programmes Director of SCCC, said, “Music has played an increasingly significant role in our Singapore Chinese culture, with the thriving local music scene in recent years. Through TGIF Music Station, we hope to showcase our distinct Singapore Chinese culture to the public through some of our favourite tunes and melodies. Through this series, we also hope give a platform for our local artistes to take centre stage, bridge them with their fans, and showcase their talents to other new audiences.”
The fortnightly series of music performances will commence from 3 August to 19 October 2018, with two sessions held each day on every first and third Friday of the month. The TGIF Music Station will move out of the SCCC for the first time with special lunch-time pop-up showcases at Tanjong Pagar Centre, bringing Singapore’s rich music culture to the working crowd at their convenience. An evening of song also awaits the public at the SCCC itself, as the centre presents an upsized music showcase, comprising three music sets featuring different artistes or performing groups from 7.15pm to 10pm.
With an exciting artiste line-up that crosses different musical genres, TGIF Music Station promises a musical immersion with songs to croon along to. The lunchtime sessions promise an impressive line-up of rising talents from the local music scene, with the likes of local song bird Cherelle, a finalist on The Voice SG/MY; singer-songwriter Marcus Lee, who represented Singapore in Chinese singing competition Song of My Dream 2; and inventive local band theColdCutDuo.
Visitors can look forward to spending an delightful evening at the SCCC, with the sweet vocals of household name Kelly Poon, whose recent rendition of ‘Always’ <Descendants of the Sun OST> earned her the title of most viral Mandarin singer in Asia; or rap along to original compositions set apart with a local touch by rappers ShiGGa Shay and Tosh Rock. Other prolific names include popular actress-singer Bonnie Loo, getai star and heartthrob Desmond Ng, as well as A Capella group MICapella who will return with fresh takes on popular tunes.
Other talented acts to anticipate include the post-acoustic three-piece indie trio Hubba Bubbas, one of Singapore’s first representatives to the Seoul Zandari Festa 2017; cult-favourite indie singer-songwriter Joie Tan, who released her EP earlier in June, as well as popular local DJ Mei Gui who has charmed the airwaves with her voice. Keep a look out as well for artiste Lennerd, a familiar face in several competitions including Hua Yi Icon Search 2018 (Champion) and Campus Superstar 2013 (Top 4), newcomer band Goose known for their post-rock melodies melded with folk-pop, and NEKO Highway with their tongue-in-cheek lyrics and bubbly tunes – the group’s debut single Dancing Cat also achieved no.3 on the ‘Global Chinese Golden Charts’!
